Selenite, Satin Spar, Desert Rose and Gypsum Flower are all varieties of the mineral known as Gypsum. This mineral is composed of calcium sulphate dehydrate. It is written chemically like this CaSO4·2H2O.

With regards to these four varieties of Gypsum, today we are going to concentrate on the Selenite variety. The name ‘Selenite’ comes from the Greek word Selene, meaning ‘The Moon’.

Selenite, along with the other varieties, is a very soft mineral, measuring 2 on the Mohs scale. The Mohs scale is a scale which characterises the scratch resistance of various minerals through the ability of a ‘harder’ material to scratch a softer material.

This makes Selenite a very fragile crystal and must always be handled with care.

This beautiful crystal is often transparent or translucent and colourless. If you find your Selenite opaque or with a colour, it is caused by the presence of other minerals and/or inclusions.

Selenite crystals occur most commonly as columnar, tabular or reticular and will often appear as glass, mica-like sheets that have been layered together. This is the most common form of Selenite Crystal that is used for lamps and wands.

Selenite, as with the other varieties, can range in size from minute to giant. The giant crystals, like the ones found in the Naica Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico can range in size. The largest discovered so far, measures 12 meters long, 4 meters in diameter and weighs approximately 55 tons. It is estimated to be 500,000 years old. These giant crystals formed above an underground magma chamber below the mine.

“The magma heated the ground water, which was saturated with sulphide ions. Cool, oxygenated surface water contacted the mineral saturated heated water, but the two did not mix due to the difference in their densities. The oxygen slowly diffused into the heated water and oxidised the sulphides into sulphates. The hydrated sulphate gypsum crystallised at an extremely slow rate over the course of at least 500,000 years forming the enormous crystals found today. The key to this process is the slow diffusion of oxygen from the cool, low density surface water into the hot, high density ground water.”
